Pure New Zealand White, Californian and Angora rabbit breeds are maintained as pedigreed breeding stocks and a collection of different coloured breeds propagated on a good quality level. These strains provide breeding and experimental animals which are well characterized and have a uniform genetic background accordingly could be used in genetic, physiological and pharmacological research and utilized as laboratory rabbits for biomedical purposes. Excellent production traits of our New Zealand White and Californian lines resulted by the long lasting selection have been previously proven therefore the breeding animals are widely accepted at farms producing meat rabbits.
To find proper selection method, feeding and mangement technologies which can be used to base and keep in production a very prolific meat rabbit line is one of our most important research goals. Ascertaining pheno- and genotypic variance of more traits underlying reproduction performance should have just been the firs steps done in this way. Studying the variance components of the glutathion peroxidase enzyme activity is a basic research which have been founded by the OTKA (National Scientific and Research Found). Research efforts have been made to improve genetic background of angora wool quality and quantity. Unfortunately because of the total lack of economic gain these latest are now almost terminated. Strains in the breed collection are recently attempted as parents in different crossing constructions.
Finally the whole farm and mainly the breed collection contribute to the education in secondary schools, universities and extension programmes.
